TLCA Junior High has added "CyberPatriot" to our course list for 6-8th grade. We are excited for the school year and all of the advancements in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. 
 
>>> What is "CyberPatriot" and why is it important?
 
CyberPatriot is the Air Force Association's National Youth Cyber Education Program, created to inspire K-12 students toward careers in cybersecurity or other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to our nation's future. Here students will gain the skills necessary to become proficient in their abilities to secure multiple types of software such as Ubunto and Windows. Students will learn to reenforce firewalls, update security software, and learn administrative duties as a part of this program as well.

Note to NEW families: If your student is a transfer and is already a part of the National Junior Honor Society, we will honor that position that has been earned. We simply request a letter from the former school.

 

The NJHS is a student group that was established in 1929 in order to help recognize and promote student achievement in the areas of scholarship, character, service, citizenship, and leadership. (It is actually part of the National Honor Society - or NHS - but with a specific emphasis on the middle-level grades.) 

 

More than 80 years later, the NJHS has maintained its reputation for excellence and continues to do so through its members, as well as through the schools and communities that support it. This reputation could not have been established without the commitment of everyone involved. 

 

Therefore, membership in the NJHS is both an honor and a commitment. And, through various NJHS chapter service activities, members continue to both maintain and broaden the qualities and capabilities they displayed in order to be selected for the association. 

 

Thousands of schools are chartered through the NJHS, and college admissions officers consider participation in an organization such as the NJHS to be a good indicator of success at the college level, and later in life as well. 

 

As long as the members and supporters of the NJHS continue to learn and grow in a positive direction, so will the NJHS continue to flourish.

Q: When Do Students Quality For the National Junior Honor Society?:

A; Membership for the National Junior Honor Society takes place at the beginning of the spring semester.

 

Q: What grades are eligible?

A: Candidates eligible for election to the chapter must be in 6-8th grade.

 

Q: How do students qualify?:

A: Students are required to have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 92.5%. The candidate must also have been enrolled for a period equivalent to one semester at the TLCA Junior High.

 

Other Qualifications:

Upon meeting the grade level, enrollment, and grade point average standards, candidates shall then be considered based on their service, leadership, character, and citizenship.

 

 

SELECTION PROCESS |

 

Below is the detailed information of the selection process taken from the newly adopted bylaws of the TLCA National Junior Honor Society

ARTICLE IV: MEMBERSHIP 

Section 1.  Membership in this chapter is an honor bestowed upon deserving students by the faculty and shall be based on the criteria of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. 

Section 2.  Membership in this chapter shall be known as active, honorary, and alumni.  Active members become alumni members at graduation. Alumni and honorary members have no voice or vote in chapter affairs. 

Section 3.  Eligibility:

  • Candidates eligible for selection to this chapter must be in the second semester of seventh grade or members of the eighth, grade class.

     

  • To be eligible for selection to membership in this chapter, the candidate must have been enrolled for a period equivalent to one semester at TLCA Junior High.

     

  • Candidates eligible for election to the chapter shall have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 92.5

     

  • Upon meeting the grade level, enrollment, and grade point average standards, candidates shall then be considered based on their service, leadership, character, and citizenship.

 

ARTICLE V:  SELECTION OF MEMBERS 

Section 1.  The selection of members to this chapter shall be by a majority vote of the faculty council which consists of five faculty members appointed by the principal. The chapter adviser shall be the sixth, nonvoting, ex officio member of the faculty council. 

Section 2.  The selection of active members shall be held once a year during the second semester of the school year.  

Section 3.  Prior to the final selection, the following shall occur:

  • Students’ academic records shall be reviewed to determine scholastic eligibility.
  • All students who are eligible scholastically (i.e., candidates) shall be notified and asked to complete and submit the candidate information form and essay on time for further consideration.
  • The faculty shall be requested to evaluate candidates determined to be scholastically eligible using the official input form provided by the chapter adviser.
  • The faculty council shall review the candidate information forms, essays, faculty input, and other relevant information to determine those who fully meet the selection criteria for membership. Each set of essays will be assigned a number by the faculty advisor so that members of the faculty council can evaluate these essays anonymously.  A candidate must receive a yes from at least three faculty members.  Before the final decision is made, the candidates are revealed to the faculty council.  Based on the described methods, Faculty Council members then determine which candidates will be asked to join the NJHS 

Section 4. Candidates become members when inducted at a special ceremony. 

Section 5.  An active member of the National Junior Honor Society who transfers from this school will be given an official letter indicating the status of his/her membership. 

Section 6.  An active member of the National Junior Honor Society who transfers to this school will be automatically accepted for membership in this chapter. The faculty council shall grant to the transferring member one semester to attain the membership requirements and, thereafter, this member must maintain those requirements for this chapter in order to retain his/her membership.
